This is a documentary that charts the early days of the Bellydance Superstars. It gives an interesting look into how the show was put together from the audition process through to their first few performances. I liked the fact that film maker was not afraid to shy away from some important issues. For example Miles Copeland beginning to understand the concept that in a commercial sense looks may be important but being able to dance was important too.
There were some interesting debates with Suhaila Salimpour about what Bellydance Superstars stood for and where Miles Copeland was going with the idea. Although I have to say that on closer examination, some of these sessions gave the impression of being staged rather than the off-the-cuff discussions they were supposed to be. That said there it was good to hear the viewpoint from both sides of the fence! We saw the dancers going off to take part in a big event in Bali, where the girls were not particularly treated with respect and one or two of the musicians & singers did not cover themselves with glory on screen.
There was also footage from their part of the Lollapalooza music festival and plenty of shots showing that a dancer’s life is not always a glamorous one! On the whole I found this an interesting insight into the world that is Miles Copeland and the Bellydance Superstars. The DVD comes with a bonus CD and there are some great extras on the DVD including interviews with dance luminaries like Morocco of New York.
